A Life Accountable

Sooner or later, we all must assume full responsibility for our actions, behavior, and lives. Unfortunately, the system in which we live makes it extremely easy to place ourselves in the position of a victim who has no real control over their lives or destiny. Not only has the system succeeded in convincing us to be suspicious of our neighbor, but it has turned us against our own blood. Americans are suspicous of non-Americans, Blacks are suspicious of Whites (and vice-versa), men are suspicious of women and women of men, and a child is suspicious of his parent. All of this suspicion that has been created in our minds leaves us feeling like we are the victim of the other, whether it be on a social or political level, and as a victim, we absolve ourselves from our responsibilities. "I did not get the promotion I wanted because I am White - my boss, who is Black, gave it to someone else, who is also Black," says Jason, your average white-collar, middle-management American. Jason has forgotton that he consistently shows up late for work, takes too many sick or personal days, and presents only mediocre work. His competitor, on the other hand, often works overtime, is never late, attends office functions, and presents above-average work. Instead of seeing his participation in his stagnation, it is easier for Jason to see himself as a victim...it is not his fault that he cannot climb another step of the corporate ladder, it is because his boss is racist. This is the attitude that the current system fosters and loves, for it prevents people from looking at themselves and making changes; if a population feels constantly victimized, they will not have the courage or strength to stand up to the victimizer (the system).

Religions only add to the problem and justify the feelings of victimization. Christainity tells us that Jesus died for us (he is the victim) at the hands of the Jews and is our "Savior and Lord". The entire Christian faith is thus based on the victimization of their icon! Nowadays, devout Christians have learned to base their actions on one key element: "What would Jesus do?"! People are willingly and consciously placing themselves in a self-appointed victimized role willingly and eagerly. What of their frustrations with their lot in life? "This is GodŐs plan for me," they peacefully answer. In other words, their God has planned out their lives and they can do nothing but sit and wait for their fate, as that is GodŐs will!

The result of this programmed victimization is increased poverty and hopelessness, reckless behavior, and emtional thinking. It leaves us in a state of confusion and apathy that is so deeply embedded that we cannot see it within ourselves or others. We just continue making excuse after excuse, waiting for GodŐs plan to manifest itself. This kind of life is not a natural one; our lives are not meant to be spent explaining why we could not make anything of ourselves! We must rise up as individuals and empower ourselves by taking responsibilty for our lives and destiny. We must rise up as indivduals so that humanity as a whole can progress and grow. We must create the world we want to see, and we cannot do that by wasting energy by making excuses for why we will not solve our problems.

We must learn to take a look at our own lives honestly. We must ask ourselves one question: what is my excuse? We are overflowing with excuses that explain our failures or shortcomings. "I couldnŐt go to college because I am poor". "I stole that ladyŐs purse because my boss fired me and I needed money".

"I was late to work because my alarm clock broke". "I did not make the deadline because my computer crashed last night", etc. ItŐs not my fault! I am the victim! Poor me!

Eventually, we all come to a point in our lives when we are tired of the excuses. We become tired of wallowing in self-pity, of playing the self-appointed role of the victim, of not having the kind of life we want for ourselves or our children. We begin to assess our lives and the monuments it contains, and eventually we dispose of those monuments, things, people, and attitudes that are not working for us. This purging of the negativity in our lives usually marks the beginning of a journey on which we search for the truth.

Taking responsibility for ones life is a challenging, for when one truly takes responsibility for ones life, one always comes to the realization that his life means more than his momentary existence on Earth. Taking full responsiblity for your life involves taking responsibility for your spiritual future! One cannot assume responsibiliity for ones future existence when trapped inside a religion that promotes attitudes of victimization and passivity, and a fundamental spiritual transformation must happen if one is honest in attempt to regain responsiblity for and control of ones life.

Indigenous spiritual systems throughout the world have one thing in common: honoring the ancestors. While Christainity and other modern religions survive becuase their followers are ignorant to the necessity of taking care of ones ancestors, those who choose to step outside of the paradigm they have inherited and embrace spiritual systems that were there before the invention of modern religions learn of the importance of their ancestors. All traditional spiritual systems teach that the ancestors can help your life on Earth, and those who practice traditional spirituality always project an aura of peace and inner beauty. This is because they have taken responsiblity for their lives and are securing their place in the afterlife. Indigenous spirituality requires one to take control of their destiny, for oneŐs destiny is not something that is static - by taking care of ones ancestors, any destiny can be changed for the better.
